Recommendations for Lightweight Time Tracking in Virtual Desktop Environments

I'm managing a virtual desktop setup for around 50 remote contractors and we're facing challenges with our current compliance agent, which is quite resource-heavy. Every time it takes a screenshot or syncs logs, the CPU spikes, causing major lag for users. This situation has led to numerous support tickets about performance issues. I'm looking to replace it with a much lighter solution that can still capture essential audit logs, like active window titles and session times, without putting a heavy strain on resources. I'm currently testing Monitask on a few images due to its smaller footprint. Has anyone deployed this agent on Citrix or VMware Horizon setups, and can you share your experience regarding its impact on resource allocation?

Have you looked into Horizon's session recording server/agent? It might offer the functionality you need. Check out the documentation for more details.

I totally understand your pain with resource-heavy agents; VDI performance is really sensitive to context-switching. I faced a similar issue while developing a dictation tool. I used C# Native AOT to keep RAM usage low and maintain almost zero CPU impact since even small spikes caused lag in Citrix. It might be beneficial to see how they manage their audit processes without putting a load on resources.

You might want to check out Syskit Monitor from Syskit Ltd. It's good for logging active and idle times, though I wouldn't call it lightweight since it runs off SQL on its own server. However, it could be worth considering depending on your needs.
