I originally planned to buy an RX 9060 XT 16GB, but prices have climbed to around €550 in France, which no longer seems like good value for a midrange card. I'm now comparing an RX 9070 GRE at roughly €600 with an RTX 5070 at about €650. The system will use a Ryzen 5 9600X, 32GB of DDR5 memory, a B850 motherboard, and an 850W power supply. My main games are CS2 and Valorant at 1440p with a 360Hz monitor, though I also play newer AAA games at 1440p. Would you save the €50 with the 9070 GRE, or is the RTX 5070's performance and feature set worth the extra cost?

The answer depends on your software and operating system as much as raw performance. Nvidia makes more sense if you care about ray tracing, upscaling, or Nvidia-specific tools. AMD is attractive for straightforward rasterized gaming and usually gives more performance per euro. At just €50 apart I’d take the 5070, but if the GRE drops closer to €550, I’d switch to the GRE.
I wouldn’t automatically call the 5070 a bargain. The performance gap over the 9070 GRE is relatively small in standard rasterized games, so the GRE is the better value if it’s meaningfully cheaper. It also has 12GB of VRAM, just like the 5070, so neither card has a clear memory-capacity advantage. Check current local pricing before deciding; the regular RX 9070 could be a better option if it is close to €600–€650.
At only €50 more, I’d lean toward the RTX 5070. The two cards are fairly close in traditional rendering, but the 5070 has stronger ray tracing and Nvidia’s broader feature support. For that small a price difference, those extras may justify choosing it—assuming the listed prices are actually available.
For CS2 and Valorant at 1440p, either card should be capable of very high frame rates, so the choice mostly comes down to AAA games and features. I’d choose the 5070 at a genuine €650 price, but I’d look hard for an RX 9070 XT first. If an XT is only modestly more expensive, it would be a much more worthwhile upgrade than moving from the GRE to the 5070.
Exactly. If the 9070 is available around €635, I’d probably choose it over both. It offers a stronger overall package and avoids paying a large premium for a fairly small gain.
