Should I be concerned about malware when buying a used CPU or GPU?

I'm curious about potential risks associated with purchasing used CPUs and GPUs. While I know to check for damaged items or fakes, I'm more concerned about whether there could be any malicious alterations, like malware embedded in the firmware. I understand that CPUs and GPUs don't store data like a USB drive, but since they have flashable firmware, is this something I need to worry about when buying used?

I’ve bought tons of CPUs and GPUs from individuals on forums and eBay without any problems. eBay offers good buyer protection, so it’s generally a safe bet. Just make sure to read the listings carefully. I've had great luck, even with 'parts only, untested' GPUs—about 90% of them worked fine!

To implant malware that persists even after a factory reset requires serious skills. If you’re really worried about it, you might just want to buy new components instead.

There’s always some level of risk, but when it comes to used CPUs and GPUs, it’s pretty low. Just inspect them as best you can before buying.

Theoretically, it’s possible for there to be malware, but unless you’re a high-profile target, it’s not something you should worry about too much. Most people wouldn’t go to the effort of infecting a used component like that—it's just not worth it for the average buyer.

Honestly, malware in CPUs or GPUs is super complicated. Most people would find it way easier to trick you into installing software rather than messing with hardware. So while anything's technically possible, you probably won’t run into this kind of issue when buying used.
