Should I buy a used RTX 3070 for my first GPU upgrade?

I'm currently using a 1060 3GB, and I feel like it's pretty outdated. There's a chance to buy a used RTX 3070 Founders Edition for $300 CAD (about $219 USD). The seller mentioned that he's had it for three years, that it tends to get hot, and he hasn't changed the thermal paste. He was using it in a server build to host virtual machines but offered some Noctua thermal paste if I want to replace it. I'm not really sure what the VM and server build means in this context, and I'm concerned if he's hiding any potential issues. Any advice on whether I should go for this purchase?

The VM and server build means the GPU was used to run virtual machines, which generally isn't as demanding as regular gaming. However, it might have been under a continuous load, so it’s good to keep an eye on how it performs. Given the age and that it's been pretty hot, I would consider asking him more about its condition and maybe checking it out before buying. A thermal paste replacement might also be necessary soon, but that’s not a huge deal if you’re okay with a little maintenance.

It sounds like a decent deal! Just remember, the heat could indicate that it may need some maintenance. If you're comfortable with opening it up and changing the thermal paste, that could help. I'd also ask if he has the original box and any other details about its usage to give you a better picture. Besides that, the 3070 will be a significant upgrade from the 1060!
