Should I Buy New or Used DDR5 RAM?

I've been looking into getting some DDR5 RAM for my new PC build, but the prices are skyrocketing right now. I'm on a tight budget and don't want to spend an extra $50-60 on new RAM kits. Are there any risks involved in buying used RAM? What should I keep an eye out for when purchasing? Additionally, does anyone have an idea of when prices might go back down?

RAM is pretty tough and doesn’t fail often, so I wouldn't hesitate too much about buying it used. It generally has a long lifespan.

There are definitely risks with used components. You could end up with a faulty RAM kit and the seller might not disclose that info. Buying new usually guarantees a non-defective product and you get that warranty just in case something goes wrong.

I’ve had good experiences buying used RAM. For instance, I got a 32GB DDR4 kit off eBay without any problems. Just make sure it’s on your motherboard’s QVL. Unfortunately, prices seem to be high for at least the next few months.

If the used RAM passes memtest, it functions like new! RAM usually has a low failure rate, with just one chip sometimes going bad. The catch is that there’s not much used DDR5 available right now, and those selling it often price it close to new prices. Prices have shot up recently, so finding a good deal may be tough.

True, but do keep in mind that memtest isn't foolproof. I've had RAM pass memtest but still cause issues in my system, which I later found out was indeed faulty RAM. So while it's a viable check, don’t just rely on that alone.

Buying used can be a smart move! People are constantly upgrading. If you're moving from a 16GB to a 32GB kit, for example, selling the 16GB might offset the costs. DDR5 is relatively new, so the risk of having a dead stick is low.
