Should I choose 8Gb/s over WiFi or 2Gb/s over Ethernet for gaming?

I'm looking to upgrade my internet from 1Gb/s, which has packet loss issues, and I have the option to get either 2Gb/s or 8Gb/s with a new provider. My current motherboard, the x670e Taichi, only supports a maximum of 2.5Gb through its Ethernet port. My main concern is whether the 8Gb/s plan would be beneficial aside from the potentially higher upload speeds, especially since the Ethernet port can only handle 2.5Gb. Since Ethernet is generally more stable, is it worth going for the slower 2.5Gb connection over cable? Also, are there ways to upgrade my Ethernet speed beyond PCIe? Additionally, I'm wondering if I should consider getting a new motherboard for better specs, even though options like 10Gb boards are quite expensive. And lastly, is there a way to upgrade the Ethernet port on a laptop that only supports 1Gb? I'll be using WiFi in that case.

Honestly, I would recommend sticking with the 2Gb/s over Ethernet. It's definitely more stable, and for gaming, stability beats speed any day. Plus, even if you go for the 8Gb plan, your 2.5Gb port caps your speed anyway, so you wouldn’t be able to take full advantage of that higher bandwidth. Also, remember that just having more bandwidth doesn’t mean it will solve packet loss issues if your connection is unstable. As for your Ethernet upgrade question, you might be able to get a USB to Ethernet adapter that supports faster speeds if you're using a laptop.

Exactly! Stability is key for gaming. You won't notice the higher speed if you keep getting lag spikes. Just go for the better quality connection over raw numbers.
