Should I go for the Ryzen 7800X3D or wait for the 9800X3D?

I've been considering my CPU options and had my eye on the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, but I've just found out that it's currently out of my budget since it's no longer on sale. I was originally planning on spending around £400 total, excluding tax since I can get that back using my business card. I know the Ryzen 7800X3D is a solid CPU and much cheaper—around £80 to £100 less than the 9800. Should I just go for the 7800X3D now, or would it make sense to hold out for the 9800 once I save a bit more money? By the way, I'm planning to pair it with an RX 9070 XT GPU, have 32GB of Kingston DDR5 RAM, and a Samsung 990 Pro 2TB SSD, with an MSI Mag B650 Tomahawk motherboard.

I’d say definitely go for the 7800X3D! When you look at the cost-to-performance ratio, spending upwards of £100 extra for at most a 10% increase in performance just doesn’t seem worth it.

Yeah, I'm with you. That doesn't seem like a smart way to spend my cash.

If you’re still considering components, I found a pretty good build list for you. Just check this out: it has the Ryzen 7 7800X3D for around £320, with a solid cooler and everything else you’d need. It looks like a really good choice!

Thanks! I’ve already picked out the motherboard, memory, and storage, so this fits in perfectly.

There’s really only a 5-10% performance difference between the 7800X3D and the 9800X3D. If the price difference is a big consideration for you, I’d say go for the 7800X3D. Plus, you can always cool it with a dual tower air cooler if that's more in your budget, rather than getting an AIO cooler.

Oh, if that type of cooler will work fine, then I can definitely swing the 9800! I was really worried about the cooling solution and had been looking into those AIOs.

Honestly, if you can hold off for a bit, I’d recommend doing that. Prices for components typically drop, so waiting a week might get you a better deal. You won't miss out on anything during that time, plus it allows you to get the money you need.

Fair enough! I guess patience pays off.
