Should I Keep Pursuing Computer Science or Call It Quits?

I just started my journey in college, majoring in computer science, and it's proving to be quite challenging. We're currently diving into the fundamentals of programming, and while I can sometimes understand the code, writing it myself is where I really struggle. I had no idea how websites were built before taking an HTML class. I'm nearly 40 and worried that getting older might make learning harder. I'm looking for a better career than my current job, and I'm drawn to computer science because I enjoy troubleshooting and creating things. But right now, I'm contemplating whether I should continue this path or just give up. Any thoughts?

You mentioned how you can read code most of the time, and that's a good starting point! Work on becoming fluent in reading it first. You can do this by researching lines of code you don't understand and practicing writing your own code regularly. Writing is tough, and it gets easier the more you do it! Give it time, and don't hesitate to ask for help when needed.

Struggling is part of the process, and you're definitely not alone! Everyone has to confront tough challenges when learning new skills. Just remember, this struggle indicates you're growing. Keep at it—every great developer has been where you are at some point!

Check out a site called Advent of Code for fun coding challenges! It’s a great way to practice problem-solving in a language you like. Or, try to find small real-life problems you can solve with code. It really helps to set achievable goals!

Never trust your thoughts after 9 PM on a Sunday! Seriously though, it’s your first semester—no one expects you to be a genius right away. If you love this field, stick with it. Try attending office hours or check out some tutorials on YouTube for extra help. Only quit if you find you're not passionate about it. The market fluctuates, but who knows what it could look like later?

Hey, give it some time! When I started college at 18, I was lost too. It’s normal to struggle at first, so don't be so hard on yourself. Just keep pushing through!
