Should I Migrate to Linux Now or Wait for a New Machine?

I've been frustrated with Windows 11 and want to transition to Linux after enjoying some experience with Mint on a spare laptop. However, I'm nervous about moving from my main laptop running Windows 10, which I've had for over four years. I'm also planning to build a new desktop soon, so part of me thinks it might be better to wait for that fresh setup to make the transition. But is it worth the wait, or should I dive into the migration now? I have a large external drive available for backups, but I'm still a bit overwhelmed by the thought of it all. What do you think? Should I stick to my comfort zone and wait, or tackle the migration now?

First off, definitely back up all your important files to an external drive before you do anything else. You should also create a Windows Installer USB as a safety net, just in case you need to revert to Windows. Playing around with different Linux distros through a live USB can help you figure out which one you like best. If you're building a new PC, consider using an AMD GPU for a better experience. Another option is to get a separate drive now, swap it with your current Windows drive, and install Linux on the new one. That way, you still have access to your old setup if needed.

Great advice! A Clonezilla image is also a solid backup option in case you have trouble reinstalling Windows later.

Interesting idea! How would swapping drives work without conflicts, or could I set up a dual boot with an external m.2? Also, I plan to use an AMD GPU as well!

It's really important to have a backup plan before you switch. Your data is at risk if you don't have other storage available right now. Consider getting external storage as your first step. A good way to back up is to create a Clonezilla image of your current setup, so you can restore it easily if anything goes wrong. Even if you're learning how to migrate now, backing up should always come first to protect your files.

I have some additional storage but need to get better about regular backups. What's the best way to approach backing up my files?
