Hey everyone! I recently built a new PC with a B760 motherboard that has 4 DDR4 RAM slots. Currently, I have 2x16GB sticks of 3200MHz RAM. I went with this setup initially since I was on a budget, but I planned to upgrade to 64GB in the future. However, with the current RAM shortage, I'm worried prices might go up and availability could become an issue. I called around local stores, but they're not selling individual 16GB sticks unless you buy a whole new PC. I did find some 8GB DDR4 3200 sticks available. Should I go ahead and buy 2x8GB to fill the remaining slots and run dual channel? Are there any possible problems I should consider? 32GB is fine for now, but I just don't want to leave those slots empty.

Honestly, I’d recommend against upgrading if you don’t absolutely need to. Adding different RAM sticks can cause problems. For instance, if you mix sticks from different manufacturers or with different timings, you might lose the possibility of running them at the full 3200MT speed. Plus, mixing capacities can lead to stability issues as well. Better to keep it simple and stick with what you’ve got for now!
I’d have to say a hard no on that. It’s generally best practice to use the same RAM for stability. If you’re thinking of upgrading to 64GB later, it would be smarter to keep those slots empty or find matching parts. Just because you have extra slots doesn’t mean they need to be filled. Sometimes having those slots open is better for future upgrades later on!
