Should I opt for a cheap server or build a rack-mounted desktop?

I manage an air-gapped network for a security camera system with a point-to-multipoint wireless backhaul. A couple of years back, I set up PRTG on an old desktop we had, and it's been super useful. Now, I'm looking to upgrade to some new rack-mountable hardware to run PRTG, Librenms, and likely Graylog. However, I can't justify spending $8k on server hardware that I've found. I don't require fancy features like redundant power supplies, and I feel like a Synology device might be too weak for my needs and would lock me into their OS. I prefer not purchasing used equipment, and we stick to a 5 to 7 year replacement cycle. So, what's my best option here? Should I just use some budget desktop hardware, or is there something I'm not considering? I'm aiming to keep it under $2k.

I totally relate! I've used Intel NUCs before for similar setups. You can snag one with a solid AMD CPU, decent WiFi, and good storage for just a few hundred bucks. It's pretty powerful for what you need!

How about looking into HPE microservers? I briefly considered them, but they seem overpriced and aren't rack-mounted, which is a dealbreaker for me too.

Have you thought about checking eBay? There's sometimes good deals to be found, especially if you're okay with slightly older models.
