I own a 2020 MacBook Air that I bought in August 2023 for $750. Unfortunately, my cat knocked it off my dresser and now the screen is completely broken. I got a quote from Apple for $448 to repair it. The technician suggested that since the laptop is five years old, it might be smarter to invest in a new one instead. I used to work in sales, so I'm wary of upselling, but I don't really know much about computer repair these days. My previous MacBook Pro from 2010 lasted until I replaced it in 2023, even though it was pretty slow. I mainly use my MacBook for writing and checking emails, not heavy usage. I also looked at aftermarket screens to fix it myself, but they would cost around $200, which feels risky to me. So here are my options: 1. pay $448 for the screen repair, 2. buy a new one for $1,050 including tax, or 3. purchase the same 2020 model for $650 (new in box). What do you think is the best choice?

Since you're mainly writing and checking emails, have you thought about getting an iPad with a keyboard? It's super portable and could really fit your needs well!
I'd go for the new one! And definitely consider getting AppleCare if you're worried about your cat knocking things over again. It can save you a headache later.
Thanks for the suggestion! I'm really leaning towards getting a laptop rather than an iPad, but I appreciate the idea!
