Should I Stick with DDR4 or Upgrade to DDR5 for RAM?

Hey everyone! I'm looking to upgrade my RAM and have a couple of questions. Currently, I have a Corsair DDR4 setup with two 8GB sticks running at 3000MHz. Can I simply add another identical kit (2x8GB) to what I already have, or are there potential compatibility issues I should be aware of? Also, I'm debating whether I should invest in DDR5 for future-proofing, but I've heard the costs can be quite high. Is it really worth it? If I do consider DDR5, which brands or models should I look into? I understand I can't mix different sizes like 8GB and 16GB, but I might be a bit outdated on this topic. Any insights would be appreciated!

Your motherboard can either support DDR4 or DDR5, but not both at the same time. If you go with DDR4, aiming for a matched set (like 2x8GB) is wise for stability. Mixing different capacities, like 8GB and 16GB, is usually not recommended unless you're prepared to tweak BIOS settings. Always try to buy RAM that's been tested together to avoid hassles later! Think of it like having a team in a kitchen; if they speak different 'languages' (latencies), things can get tricky! Just stick with paired kits for the best performance.

What specific numbers should I check for compatibility? What if the store doesn't list them?

Just to clarify, you can't just slap DDR5 in your system. If you want DDR5, you'd need a new motherboard and likely a new CPU as well. Your current setup is limited to DDR4, so stick with that unless you're ready for a full upgrade.

By 'system,' do you mean the entire setup or just the OS?

You can't use DDR5 in your current setup since your motherboard only supports DDR4. I'd recommend getting another 2x8GB kit that's identical to what you have now. If you need more memory, just make sure it's similar to your existing RAM to avoid compatibility issues. I've been running 4x8GB LPX without problems for years!

Why can't I use DDR5? What do I need to change?
