Should I Test My Power Supply Before Installation?

I'm considering whether or not to test my new Corsair RM850e power supply (2025 model) before installing it. I've come across the paperclip test method, but I've also read opinions that suggest it's not really necessary beyond just checking if the unit powers on. My main concern is that if I do the test, I might have to deal with any residual electrical charge when I connect it to my components later. What do you think?

I had a bad experience with an EVGA PSU that failed after a while. Testing can help avoid that, especially since some cheap testers don't put the PSU under an actual load. Itโs a simple process, so I recommend doing it.

I've never tested a new PSU before installation. I've always found they work perfectly right out of the box. If your PSU is new, I wouldnโt worry too much about testing it.

I personally test mine every time just to be safe, but honestly, Iโve built several systems without any testing and had no issues at all. It's really up to your comfort level.

Testing your PSU isn't absolutely necessary unless you're having problems. If everything else is functioning well, you can probably skip it. Just make sure everything looks fine before connecting it to your components.
