I've been working as a remote service desk analyst for two years, specifically in an overnight role, earning $28 an hour. I'm technically an employee as of May after starting as a contractor, but I can't apply for internal positions until this coming May. I recently applied for an onsite sysadmin position with a pay range of $32-$40 an hour, which would require me to relocate. I had a positive interaction with the recruiter and manager, and I have an interview with the IT manager next Monday. My main question is: Is it wise to pursue this position? The role is contract-to-hire for nine months, and I mentioned a pay range of $36-$40. I have no sysadmin experience, and I'm concerned about the shift from a permanent position to a contract one. Is this pay range reasonable for the sysadmin role? Also, I've just started my studies in network and cloud engineering at WGU with the goal to move away from the service desk.

At the end of the day, it boils down to what you're aiming for. If the sysadmin role offers valuable experience, it might be a good move, but leaving a stable remote position for an onsite contract just for a title change seems risky. Although, moving from night to day shifts might be beneficial in the long run!
I totally get your hesitation about leaving a full-time position for a contract role. Unless you're extremely confident in your skills for the sysadmin job, it might be risky. Plus, the pay you're looking at seems more in line with service desk roles in larger cities. Just be cautious and evaluate how secure that contract feels before making the switch!
That’s a fair point! I’ve noticed that many companies underpay for service desk jobs too, so $28 doesn't seem terrible, but still, it’s about your comfort with risks.
Honestly, I wouldn't exchange a remote position for an in-office one unless it came with a significant pay bump, like at least $15 more per hour. Plus, the idea of being on a trial contract period while needing to relocate feels like too many uncertainties. If this was a direct hire, I’d feel better about it, but contracting can be tricky.
You’ve got a point! If this role was a full-time sysadmin position, it might be worth it due to the experience you'd gain being onsite compared to remote support.
Totally agree! Jumping into a sysadmin role could really ramp up your skills; it could make the move worthwhile.
Are you sure about the payment situation? $40 on a contract might not be as great as it seems. If you're currently a W2 employee, you may actually end up with lower overall earnings due to taxes on a 1099. Be aware of the financial shifts!
I see what you mean! Just to clarify, I’d be working through a staffing agency, so I would be a W2 employee with them and then with the company later on.
Right, that makes sense. Just keep in mind, I believe you're still under a W2 with your current service desk job?

I relate to that. My night shift is super laid-back since I only deal with real issues a few hours in. Definitely something to consider!
