Should I Trust This Guy Offering a Job with a Tiny Startup?

Hey everyone, I'm in a bit of a weird situation and I could really use your thoughts. There's a guy I know from a mutual friend group—he runs a private limited company that he claims is a consultancy doing data entry and software work for foreign clients. He has a small office in his flat and a few employees, plus he boasts about having connections because of his wealthy family background. Recently, he started asking me to build websites for his ventures without discussing any payment, which made me think he might owe me something later. But now, he's asking for more complex projects, including a full-stack CRM and HRM system, while hyping up a 'lead' role where I'd supposedly manage 900 employees and meet board members. This all sounds impressive, but I'm starting to get suspicious. After doing some research, I found that his company has a very small paid-up capital and no financial filings since 2022, which raises a lot of red flags. Should I trust him and continue working, ask for a written contract, or just cut ties? I'd love to hear your opinions about whether this situation seems shady, and what you think I should do!

Given the red flags with the company’s structure, I'd say it's best to steer clear of this situation unless you can get a clear, signed agreement and an upfront payment. The risk of unpaid taxes could also haunt you if things go south.

It seems like there's a lot of sketchy stuff here. Paid-up capital isn't the only factor, but the lack of financial records and poor employee pay sounds quite concerning. You should definitely ask for a contract and consider your next moves carefully.

If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck... just be cautious. It sounds like he might be overhyping things. Maybe consider cutting ties unless you see some solid proof of legitimacy from him.

Did you actually get to meet any of his employees? Their feedback might help you gauge if this guy is for real. If he’s always there and you can't meet them, that's definitely a warning sign.

You mentioned you're still in school, right? Depending on your situation, it might be low risk if he actually pays you, even if it turns out to be a short-term gig. However, I would definitely push for a contract and an upfront payment before committing further. No payment means no work!
