Should I upgrade from my i7 10700k to a Ryzen 7 7800x3d?

I'm currently using an i7 10700k with a z490plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4 3000MHz RAM, and a GeForce RTX 3070. My focus is on playing competitive games like Valorant and Fortnite at 1080p with low settings for the best performance. In Fortnite's stacked endgames, I'm getting around 90-120 fps, while in mid-game I hit about 180 fps. In Valorant, my fps fluctuates from about 250 in quiet periods down to 160 in chaotic moments. I'm wondering how much of an improvement I could expect in terms of fps if I upgrade to a Ryzen 7 7800x3d, paired with 32GB DDR5 6000MHz RAM and a B650 motherboard while keeping my current GPU. I've heard that the CPU plays a crucial role in performance for both Valorant and Fortnite, and I'm aiming for consistent 300 fps in Valorant and around 240 fps in Fortnite. Looking forward to your thoughts!

I suggest you upgrade. You definitely need a better CPU and RAM to keep up with future games. Even with that, try checking what's on sale, and consider a prebuilt that includes a nice GPU like the 4070/5060, since they're becoming hard to find and pricey.

Before you make any upgrades, I recommend capping your fps based on your monitor's refresh rate. It might give you smoother gameplay even at lower frames. Also, keep an eye on your performance metrics using Windows Game Bar; it helps you see where the bottlenecks are in your system.

Good idea! I’ll check usage levels. I’ve noticed my CPU is maxing out while my GPU isn't fully utilized, so maybe a CPU upgrade is the way to go.

Honestly, with your current setup, some minor tweaks might do the trick. Look into optimizing your settings and see if that helps with your fps before jumping into an upgrade. Sometimes game settings can make a bigger difference than new hardware!

With the prices of RAM skyrocketing lately, if you're planning to switch to AM5, it might be wise to act soon. DDR5 is anticipated to remain expensive for a while. However, if you can snag a good deal on the new components, it could greatly enhance your gaming experience.

Thanks for the heads up! I managed to get some RAM from a friend before prices went crazy, so I might be okay on that front.
