Should I Upgrade My CPU and Motherboard Now and My GPU Later?

I'm considering upgrading my CPU and motherboard soon, but I plan to wait about six months to upgrade my GPU. I mostly play CPU-intensive games like Rust, so I'm worried about potential bottlenecks or system issues after the upgrade. Here are my current specs: i7 9700k, RTX 2070 Super, Gigabyte z390 UD, and 16GB DDR4 3200MHz RAM. I'm thinking about upgrading to a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, an ASROCK B850M-X motherboard, and DDR5 6000MHz RAM. I hope to get the new GPU, an RTX 5070 TI, in around six months. Thanks for any advice!

Yeah, upgrading to that CPU and motherboard now sounds like a good plan. You won’t face any major issues waiting on the GPU upgrade as long as your current setup can hold up. Just make sure the ASROCK board is reliable since there have been some concerns about compatibility with high-end Ryzen CPUs. Definitely a solid choice but keep an eye on quality reviews!

Honestly, I think you'll be fine upgrading in stages. I usually do parts instead of a full system upgrade. Just one thing to note: your current DDR4 RAM won’t work with the Ryzen 9800X3D since you'd need DDR5 RAM. Just plan to get all components together if you want it to work seamlessly!

Thanks for clarifying! I’ll ensure to buy the CPU, motherboard, and RAM all at once.

I did a similar staggered upgrade and it worked out great! I switched from a 2070 Super to a newer setup with DDR5 and an AM5 chip while keeping my old GPU for a while. It gave me a nice performance boost and worked without issues. Moving to a 5070 later sounds ideal too!
