Should I Upgrade My CPU for 4K Gaming?

I'm currently using an i5 12600k with a 3080ti graphics card, playing on a 42-inch LG C2 OLED at 120Hz. Most of the time, I'm playing BF6 at high to ultra settings without DLSS, and it runs relatively smoothly—though I experience some stuttering during intense action. I'm contemplating upgrading to a 5080 GPU, but I've read mixed opinions about how much the CPU impacts performance at 4K resolution. Would it be a waste to upgrade to a 9800X3D CPU alongside the 5080, or could that pairing improve my performance and allow me to push for higher settings without any major issues?

Honestly, I'm not sure how the i5 12600k performs compared to the 9800X3D, but when I tested the Zen 5 CPUs with a 5080, I found the X3D upgrade wasn't worth the cost. The performance difference was about 10% for the games I play, which doesn’t seem to justify the extra cash for the X3D. You might experience some bottlenecks, so checking benchmarks is a good idea to see if you'd notice any performance drops.

True, but don't forget that X3D chips can improve 1% lows significantly, which is crucial for smoother gameplay during intense sequences.

Spending a bit more on a solid CPU to ensure it supports your GPU fully sounds smart to me. You might not see a huge difference at 4K, but it's worth considering if you're aiming for the best experience.

At 4K, the GPU and VRAM are typically what hold you back. If you can get a 5090, go for it! But if not, the 5080 is a solid choice. The 12600k is still a strong CPU and paired with a 5080, you might not even notice much difference compared to a 9800X3D setup.

Definitely! I'm using a 5080 on an i9-11900k and it plays beautifully at 4K. Can't wait to upgrade to a 9950X3D later!

You’re right, especially if you stick to high settings. Remember to use DLSS to improve performance even more!

If you're mainly playing demanding titles and you want to keep up with future games, I'd recommend focusing on the GPU. The improvements from an X3D at 4K aren’t earth-shattering, so save that money for better graphics. Just make sure your system RAM is adequate—32GB is perfect!

Exactly! The software and game optimization tend to make the CPU's role less critical at that resolution.

And wise advice about keeping an eye on potential future upgrades for your CPU too. That could give you a nice boost later!

You might not see a massive FPS boost with the 9800X3D at 4K, but it should help with reducing stutters, especially in CPU-intensive shooters. Are you on DDR4 or DDR5 with your 12600k? That could also impact your performance.

BoostedBean92 -

I’ve got 32GB of DDR5, which I believe is optimal! I’m leaning towards upgrading to a 5080 and sticking with my i5 for now.

Yeah, I'd say upgrading the GPU first while keeping your current CPU might yield better results initially.
