Should I Upgrade My CPU or GPU First?

My PC is starting to feel pretty sluggish and I'm thinking about upgrading. Right now, I have a Ryzen 7 1700 and an RX 580, so I'm wondering which would be the better upgrade: the CPU or the GPU? What do you think would be the smartest choice?

Honestly, with those older parts, you might want to consider just building a new rig if your budget allows. It could save you a headache in the long run!

Can you share your motherboard and power supply details? Also, what’s your budget? Knowing that will help us suggest better options for you.

Upgrading your CPU to something like the Ryzen 5 5600 or the Ryzen 7 5700X could really help. You might need to update your motherboard’s BIOS for that, but used prices are pretty decent—around $100. The RX 580 is starting to struggle with modern games, but both components are getting old, so either direction you choose could work. I’d recommend going for the CPU first.

Make sure to check what motherboard you’re using! You could likely upgrade to a Ryzen 5600X or 5800X for about $100 to $150. If you can stretch your budget, think about adding more RAM, say 32GB, which would be an upgrade from your current 16GB and only costs around $50. Upgrading the GPU can always come later when you have more funds available.
