Should I Upgrade My CPU to DDR4 or Go All In on DDR5?

I'm facing a bit of a dilemma with my current PC, which has become quite CPU bottlenecked after upgrading to a 5070 Ti. I have two main options to improve my setup:

1. **Option 1**: I can use a DDR4 motherboard (LGA1700) I already have and upgrade my CPU to the i7-14700K for about $443.
2. **Option 2**: I can opt for a new bundle from MicroCenter to switch to AM5 and DDR5 with the Ryzen 7 7800X3D for around $833, or upgrade to the Ryzen 7 9800X3D for about $883.

As I've only ever built Intel systems for the last 20 years, I'd really appreciate any advice on making the switch to AMD!

I'd lean towards the Ryzen 7 7800X3D. It's got better performance and more future-proofing with AM5. If you're planning on gaming, the extra cost can be worth it for that upgrade path!

Even if it was your own money? I mean, how much do you value that performance boost?

I agree with going for the 7800X3D. That setup will definitely provide solid performance and upgradability for the future. It’s a pretty nice combo if you care about longevity!

Are you just gaming? If so, maybe consider going DDR4 with an i5-14600KF instead. It’s almost as good as the i7 and costs about $220. Overall, I'd still choose Intel given the price difference for similar performance. Plus, DDR5 prices should eventually normalize, making future upgrades easier without breaking the bank.

I’m about to upgrade to the 14700K as well. I’ve looked at those bundles, but they seem pricey for the specifics of mobo and RAM included. I think I’ll be happy with the jump to the 14700K and might wait for DDR5 prices to drop. All benchmarks suggest it should be a decent upgrade from my current setup!

While the AM5 route is better in the long run, I’m not sure it’s worth the extra $400 just based on the benchmarks I saw. Depending on where you game, the i7-14700K isn’t far behind, especially at higher resolutions like 1440p.

Yeah, I'm mainly gaming at 1440p, so that makes sense! Thanks for clearing that up.
