Should I upgrade my current AM4 system or move to AM5 for 1440p gaming?

I'm currently running a Ryzen 9 3900X, an RTX 2070 Super, and 32 GB of DDR4, but the system is starting to feel dated for 1440p gaming. I'm considering pairing a Radeon 9070 XT with either a Ryzen 7 5800X3D while keeping my current motherboard and memory, or building a new AM5 system around a Ryzen 7 7800X3D.

The graphics card could move into a future build, but the 5800X3D would essentially be a temporary purchase because I expect to switch platforms in two or three years if RAM and SSD prices improve. The problem is that the 5800X3D currently costs about as much as the 7800X3D, and AM5 would require buying a new motherboard and DDR5 memory during a major price increase.

I may be able to sell my current PC for around $400, which would help offset a new build. I'm also dealing with crashes and blue screens, and one memory stick or possibly one DIMM slot seems unreliable. The stick closest to the CPU cooler may be overheating, since removing it temporarily fixes the issue for several months.

Would it make more sense to buy a cheaper temporary CPU such as a 5500X3D or 5600X3D, keep my current platform, and upgrade later? Or should I absorb the higher memory and storage costs now and move straight to AM5? I'm also open to other cost-effective combinations that would still provide a strong 1440p gaming experience.

A lower-cost X3D chip could be a sensible stopgap if you want to keep your existing board. Look at a 5500X3D, 5600X3D, or a good used CPU if they’re available locally. That lets you spend most of the budget on the graphics card, which will matter more for 1440p, and delay the platform replacement. Just avoid paying nearly the same price for a 5800X3D as a 7800X3D unless the rest of the upgrade cost makes staying on the current platform worthwhile.

That’s my concern with the 5800X3D—it feels like paying a premium for something I already expect to replace. A cheaper stopgap would make more sense if I can find one at a reasonable price.

The graphics card is the part most likely to transform your 1440p experience, so I’d avoid overspending on the CPU just to have a newer platform. If your motherboard supports it, use a reasonably priced X3D upgrade or replace the faulty memory, then pair it with the 9070 XT. Move to AM5 later when you actually need more CPU performance or when the total platform cost becomes easier to justify. If you already know you need a new motherboard and memory because of hardware failures, then going straight to AM5 is more defensible.

Before buying anything, properly isolate the memory problem. Test each stick individually in the recommended motherboard slot, then test the suspected slot with a known-good stick. Run a memory test at stock settings and temporarily disable any overclock or memory profile. If the problem follows the memory stick, replace the kit; if it stays with the slot, the motherboard may be at fault. A faulty DIMM or board makes a platform upgrade more appealing, but you should identify which part is failing first.

I tested the DIMM slots and the issue seems connected to the stick closest to the cooler, but I haven’t completely ruled out the slot. Removing that stick stops the boot problems and crashes for a while, so I’m going to test it more methodically.

I wouldn’t build your entire upgrade plan around prices returning to their old levels. A future correction might happen, but it could also just mean prices stop climbing rather than return to what they used to be. If you can comfortably wait and your current system is still usable, waiting is reasonable, but there’s no guarantee it will pay off.
