Should I Upgrade My GPU or CPU for Better FPS?

Hey everyone! I'm not super tech-savvy, so I hope this question makes sense. I have a gaming PC with an Intel i9-10900K CPU and an RTX 3080 GPU, paired with a Z490 motherboard. I'm currently playing my favorite shooter games on low settings at 1440p and usually get around 120-140 FPS. However, I'm aiming to hit 200+ FPS while keeping the same graphics settings. I'm considering two upgrade paths, each around the $1,000 mark: 1) Upgrading to an RTX 5080 GPU, or 2) Swapping my CPU, motherboard, and RAM for a 9800X3D setup. What do you think would give me the best performance boost? I'd love to hear your thoughts! Thanks!

Try dropping the resolution to 720p for a bit. This might give you a clearer picture of what your CPU can deliver without the GPU holding back the performance. If you're still not hitting your target FPS, then yeah, a CPU upgrade might be necessary!

If you're playing online FPS games like CS:GO or Valorant, I’d lean towards upgrading to the 9800X3D. From what I know, the 3080 shouldn't be your bottleneck in these titles.

I have a different take; your 10900K should still handle most newer GPUs pretty well, so I’m not convinced it’s the CPU causing your FPS cap right now.

That makes sense! I’ve heard that high settings at 4K favors GPUs, while low settings are more CPU-intensive. So, it seems a CPU upgrade would make more sense in your case.

For FPS games, it’s typically advisable to upgrade your CPU.

You might want to consider going with a 7800X3D paired with a 5070 Ti or a 9070 XT. They provide great performance and could keep you within your budget. Plus, a 7800X3D could still give you a solid edge over your current setup!

Yeah, a 7800 XT could also work well if you're trying to keep your costs down while still getting a noticeable upgrade. It's all about balancing performance with price!

Thanks for the tip! I hadn’t considered the 7800 XT as an option.

Ultimately, it really depends on the specific games you're playing.
