I've got a 5700XT paired with a 3700X and 32GB of RAM, and I usually game on a 1440p monitor. It's starting to show its age with recent titles; I can't even run The Last of Us Part 1 without limiting it to 40 FPS for stability on high settings. Lowering the settings doesn't seem to help much, and I'm not a fan of FSR since it can look fuzzy in some games. I'm wondering what a budget-friendly upgrade would be? Should I consider switching back to my old 1080p monitor for a performance boost, or is that a waste of time?

Definitely start with a modern GPU! You'll notice a huge performance boost, and the upscaling capabilities of current-gen cards are a lot better. Check out options like the RTX 5070 or the new RX 9070; they’re solid choices that should really breathe new life into your gaming experience.
