Upgrading My PC – Need Advice on CPU and Motherboard While Keeping My RTX 3080 Ti

I'm looking to upgrade my computer but want to keep my NVIDIA RTX 3080 Ti and my 32GB DDR3 RAM for now. I'm new to this, and I'm not sure which motherboard or CPU I should choose. My computer specs include a GIGABYTE AMD FX-6300 CPU, GIGABYTE 970A-DS3P FX motherboard, and I have a budget between $1,000 to $2,000. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

With your current budget, the best move is to jump to an AM5 setup. Grab a good Ryzen CPU and at least 32GB of fast DDR5 RAM. It will elevate your performance a lot and your RTX 3080 Ti will match up much better with newer parts. Check sites like PCPartPicker to find the best deals on compatible components.

That's super helpful, thanks! I will start looking at Ryzen options.

Absolutely, you’ll be shocked at how much better your setup can perform!

We really need to see your complete parts list for a better assessment, but if you are indeed using DDR3, it's time for a full upgrade. Stick that 3080 Ti into a new build. Avoid trying to use that DDR3 anymore; it's far too outdated for current hardware!

Got it, I'll start looking for a whole new setup then!

Yeah, doesn’t make sense to put new components with such old RAM. Go for a full upgrade!

Your setup is pretty dated. If you really want to keep that GPU, you’ll need to look at moving to something like an AM5 platform with DDR5 memory. That’ll give you better performance and future upgrade paths.

So, you recommend AM5 and DDR5 for the best future-proofing, huh? Sounds good!

That's the direction I'm thinking too. What specific CPU would you suggest?

Staying on DDR3 means a lot of limitations. If you're set on keeping your GPU, absolutely upgrade your motherboard and CPU. I suggest looking at an X99 board with a decent processor, but honestly you're going to see a much bigger boost going to DDR4 or 5. That said, it may stretch your budget a bit!

I had no idea that could be the case. I'll definitely prioritize those upgrades!

Good advice! x99 boards are tricky to find, so check compatibility first.

Since you're still on DDR3, I'd recommend getting a new setup entirely and just transferring your RTX 3080 Ti to that. The older components are quite limiting, and upgrading individual parts like the CPU and motherboard might not yield great results. A full rebuild would be more beneficial for future upgrades too!

Sounds good! Any specific builds or parts you would recommend?

I appreciate the advice! What kind of new CPU and motherboard should I look for?
