I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 4500 and an RX 6600 in my PC, and I'm considering an upgrade. If I switch to an AM5 motherboard, it'll be quite a bit more expensive. Alternatively, how does the Ryzen 7 5700X compare to my current setup? Is the performance difference considerable, or would it be a minor upgrade?

If you're looking to save money, you might consider a CPU like the 5600, 5600X, or even the 5600F. Just steer clear of the 5600G if you can. An AM4 upgrade will definitely be cheaper than jumping to AM5.
Any Vermeer CPU would be a solid upgrade if it's priced well. Just make sure you're avoiding the Cezanne parts since they have less L3 cache and are not as good for gaming. Check out the list of AMD Ryzen processors to make sure you're getting the right one.
The Ryzen 7 5700X is a significant upgrade over the Ryzen 5 4500. It has 8 cores and 16 threads, compared to your 6 cores and 12 threads. Plus, it has a higher boost clock and much more L3 cache, which means it's about 30-40% faster in multi-threaded tasks and offers much better performance in gaming.
