I have a gaming PC that's about 4.5 years old and primarily used for Counter-Strike 2 and some other titles. I've been dissatisfied with the performance of CS2, which seems to be linked to my CPU. Here's what I currently have:
- Motherboard: Gigabyte B450 Gaming X (AM4)
- CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X (3.60 GHz)
- Cooler: AMD stock
- RAM: 16GB DDR4 (3000 MHz)
- GPU: GeForce RTX 3060
- PSU: Enermax 600W
I was thinking about upgrading to the Ryzen 7 5700X3D, known as the top performer for AM4 setups, but they are currently overpriced at around €250 or more, and I'd have to buy from private sellers, which makes me uneasy.
Alternatively, I'm considering switching to the AM5 platform with these components:
- Motherboard: MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk
- CPU: Ryzen 7 7800X3D
- Cooler: To be determined
- RAM: 32GB DDR5 (6000 CL30 EXPO)
This upgrade would cost me about €750-800, but I believe it would provide better long-term performance with new parts. Would this be a wise path to take? Also, can I continue using my current GPU for now and upgrade it later? Am I overlooking any potential issues with this plan?

I upgraded from a Ryzen 3700 to a 5700X3D last year for CS2, and the performance boost was incredible! If you find a reliable source for the 5700X3D, definitely go for it. If not, the AM5 route with the 7800X3D is a smart investment for the future, especially if you're planning a whole new build soon.
You’re looking at a significant difference in budget between these two upgrades. Be real with yourself about how much you're willing to spend. If you have the budget for the AM5 upgrade, then it’s worth considering doing it all at once.
There's no one-size-fits-all answer here. Upgrading to AM5 could be beneficial as it's the latest platform and supports newer technologies like PCIe 5.0. However, since CS2 isn't super demanding, you might consider sticking with your AM4 setup and going with the 5700X3D if you can find it reasonably priced. Just be careful with private sellers—maybe check if a 5800X3D is available instead.
The 5700X3D and 5800X3D are both hard to find where I am, and prices are crazy for used ones. I would jump on them if trusted sources had them!
Going with the AM5 upgrade makes more sense! It’s a more future-proof option, and I think your plan for the GPU sounds solid too. Sounds like you’ve got a great handle on things already!
Just a reminder that moving to AM5 means needing to invest in a new motherboard and RAM, which could lose you some value if new tech is out in the next year or so. You might benefit more from upgrading the CPU now, especially if prices come down.

What did you pay for your 5700X3D, if you don’t mind sharing?
