Should I Upgrade to an AIO Cooler for My New CPU?

I'm currently using an Intel i5-12600K with a Thermaltake UX200 air cooler, and it's been satisfactory so far. I'm planning to upgrade to an i7-14700K, which has a maximum power draw of 253W. I won't be overclocking because my motherboard doesn't support it, so I'm expecting its usage to be around 200-225W. I've seen mixed opinions on whether an AIO cooler is really necessary. If I do go for one, I'm considering the NZXT Kraken Elite 240. I'd appreciate any thoughts or experiences on this!

It really depends on what you want to achieve with your CPU. If you’re mostly gaming, a good air cooler might suffice, especially since games don’t always demand the full wattage. I have a 12900K that manages just fine with an air cooler, but if you're pushing the i7 hard with productivity tasks, then an AIO might be a better fit. Also, I strongly recommend adding a contact frame since the i7 runs hot.

That makes sense! I'm just into gaming, mostly things like DCS and Battlefield, so maybe I am overdoing it with the AIO.

What’s the main goal of your upgrade? If it's for gaming performance, that makes sense based on your comments. Higher settings in games, especially VR, could benefit from better cooling.

Yeah, I want to play DCS in VR and future-proof my setup.

An AIO cooler does perform a bit better than air coolers, especially with a higher wattage CPU. I’d say go with the Kraken but keep your expectations in check—don’t cheap out on air coolers if you want to avoid thermal issues.

A good air cooler or a solid AIO is the way to go. AIOs generally offer better cooling due to more surface area for heat dissipation. I've used the Kraken Elite 240 and it keeps my Ryzen 9 pretty cool. Just remember, a 360mm will give you even better temps if your case can fit it!

You might want to consider a 360mm AIO if you're looking to get the most out of the i7, especially during peak usage. It’ll help with cooling if you plan to push the CPU.

Is that for normal use or only if I overclock? Not sure if my case can handle a 360mm.
