Should I Upgrade to R7 9800X3D or Stick with R7 5700X3D?

Hey everyone! I've been having some serious issues with my 4+ year old R7 5800X CPU lately. It's been crashing randomly without any bluescreens or logs, and I've noticed it's overheating regularly, reaching over 90°C. I tried replacing the thermal paste and reseating my Dark Rock Pro 4 cooler, but nothing seems to help. Now I'm considering whether to replace it with an R7 5700X3D on my existing AM4 setup, or if I should go all out and upgrade to AM5 with an R7 9800X3D. I'm using an RX 7900GRE and I game at 1440p on a 240Hz OLED, so I'm really aiming to make the most of my monitor's refresh rate. Would the performance difference between the 5700X3D and 9800X3D be significant enough to justify the upgrade if money isn't a concern?

If your CPU is overheating, I think it's more about your cooling setup than the CPU itself. You might want to check if your cooler is mounted correctly. But to answer your question, the 9800X3D does provide around a 20% performance boost at 1440p compared to the 5700X3D, although this can vary by game. If budget isn't an issue, I'd say go for the 9800X3D along with a new motherboard and RAM, it'll keep your system solid for future upgrades.

Instead of spending all that money on a new CPU, have you considered getting a new CPU cooler? Your Dark Rock Pro 4 is good, but if you're still having overheating issues, it might be worth looking into other cooling solutions. Spending $30 on a different cooler might save you a lot in the long run.

Getting the R7 9800X3D along with a high-quality X670 motherboard and some fast RAM sounds like a great plan. If it gives you an extra 20% performance boost with your RX 7900GRE, it could really enhance your gaming experience. It's definitely worth considering if you're looking to maximize your setup.
