Should I Use a Non-Genuine Hard Drive to Replace a Failed One in My Dell Server?

I'm dealing with a Dell R540 server that has a RAID array consisting of 9 x 8TB drives, and one of them has failed. Since the server is out of warranty, I'm considering whether it's worth it to install a non-genuine hard drive as a replacement. What do you all think? Do I really need to stick to genuine Dell drives?

As long as the replacement drive has the same interface (SAS for SAS, SATA for SATA), you should be fine. Just make sure it’s an enterprise-grade drive. It’ll work without any issues.

I’d definitely go for a genuine Dell drive. If it were a new setup, I’d probably choose WD Gold or Seagate drives instead, but for an existing RAID array, keeping the same model is a safer bet.

I’ve never used a 'genuine' drive in a Dell server myself. I’ve had success with various SAS and SATA drives from different vendors without significant problems. The only issues I faced were with some test drives that the server flagged as incompatible, which just led to some annoying alerts. Just be cautious about mixing different types in the same array; otherwise, picking up the same model from the manufacturer should work fine.
