I'm having trouble with my large GPU installation. No matter how I try to fit it, it feels like I have to force it into the PCIe slot, and sometimes it doesn't even click in properly—it just gets stuck. I'm used to smaller GPUs where installation was quick and easy, so I'm not sure if the plate should be outside the case or if it's supposed to fit inside. I've attached a picture for reference.

I couldn't see the details from the picture, but is that a Corsair 4000D case? I remember having similar issues when I installed my GPU in that case. What worked for me was removing the backplate first, securely seating the GPU tabs in the holes, and then putting the backplate back on after everything lined up. It made the process way easier!
The tabs on the GPU's backplate should definitely fit into the holes on the back of your case, not the outside. You might want to double-check that your motherboard is installed correctly, as everything should align properly.
This is the right point to focus on! Parts should fit snugly but shouldn't require much force. Just make sure that the dust cover on the PCIe connector is removed; that’s a common oversight when installing GPUs.

Yeah, that’s the case! It’s pretty awkward to work with for GPU installs.
