Three years ago, I transitioned from being a Civil Engineer to a DevOps Engineer due to my passion for IT and Linux. I started by taking online courses, including CS50X and a Cloud Computing Bootcamp, which led to my AWS certification and experience in Cloud Engineering and DevOps practices. After securing a position as a DevOps Engineer, I implemented CI/CD processes and managed infrastructure, but unfortunately, I was laid off six months ago and have since struggled to find a new job amidst fierce competition. Most jobs require over three years of experience, and every listing seems to have different requirements. Despite feeling mid-level in my skills, I constantly feel inadequate and unsure about whether to stick with DevOps or pivot to another role. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

First off, you don’t need to start over; it’s all about rebranding yourself. DevOps is quite broad, so focus on what you enjoy—maybe go into Infrastructure, SRE, or Platform roles. With your hands-on experience, you can definitely market yourself as a mid-level engineer!
What’s the difference between those roles? I do a mix of everything and didn’t know they were separate!

Exactly! You might even want to create separate resumes for each focus area. You’ve accomplished a lot in just 1.5 years!
