Struggling to Move Past Job Screenings – Any Advice?

Hey everyone! I recently went through an organizational restructure and got laid off, so I've been on the job hunt for the last couple of weeks. I've applied to over 70 positions and have received feedback from about 7 or 8 recruiters after initial screenings saying I'm a great fit, but then I don't hear back. For instance, I spoke with a Deloitte recruiter who seemed pleased after our phone screening, but now it's just radio silence. Another recruiter told me they were busy but would call me back about scheduling an interview, yet I still haven't heard anything after trying to follow up. I've also completed some technical tests and initial calls with no updates since then. Am I being too impatient? It's been 4-5 years since my last job search, and my previous experience was much quicker from screening to offer. What's the norm these days?

You’re definitely not being impatient! It’s common for recruiters to forget about candidates once the call is over. Two weeks is actually pretty normal these days. Keep applying and try not to stress too much about waiting—companies can be slow!

You're stepping into the market at a time when competition is fierce. Remember that recruiters will talk to many candidates, so they have to evaluate based on limited info. They're incentivized to find the strongest candidates, so sometimes it’s just about luck and timing.

From my experience, recruiters can sometimes be a significant hurdle for good candidates. They don’t always fully understand the skills on resumes and might pick candidates at random. It can feel frustrating, but it's part of the process.

Getting 7-8 responses from 70 applications is actually pretty solid! When I was looking last time, I sent close to 200 applications and only got a handful of responses. Two weeks isn’t long in this game—keep pushing!

Just be patient and follow up when necessary. Beyond that, there's not much you can do. Keep applying and interviewing until you get an offer!
