Sudden Shift from IT Support to Sysadmin: Any Advice?

I've been working in IT for around 10 years, mostly in support roles. Recently, due to a shake-up in the IT leadership, my position has changed drastically. Instead of just managing helpdesk duties, I'm now tasked with handling complex sysadmin work with virtually no guidance or training. I'm stuck managing outdated infrastructure, troubleshooting Azure issues without documentation, reviewing backups after a data center incident, and taking charge of telephony, cloud migration, patch management, and audits. Despite my role still being labeled as deskside support, I've effectively transitioned into full-on sysadmin work overnight, and it's really overwhelming. Has anyone else gone through something like this? How did you cope and maintain your sanity in such a fast-paced, chaotic environment?

Some folks would love to jump into this kind of role! It might be rough at the start, but if you stick with it, you'll find it rewarding. My advice? Take it one day at a time and focus on learning as much as you can quickly.

I can relate! That's exactly how I started out, and now I've streamlined my network. It was tough at first, but totally worth it!

It's quite the adjustment moving from support to infrastructure, right? We often have to learn so many new things on the fly. Is your new IT leadership aware of how new all this is for you? Setting some boundaries could help as you adapt. And remember, having a non-tech hobby is key for stress relief! I’m all about biking and hiking myself; they really help me recharge after a long day.
