Suggestions for a Compact Scanner to Archive Student Work

As a teacher, I found myself accumulating a lot of paper last year to keep a portfolio of my students' work. I'm looking for a compact scanner that can handle multiple handwritten assignments at once and help me store them digitally. Ideally, I want something affordable that can scan quickly. Additionally, I'd love any tips on how to label each PDF with the respective student's name. My goal is to streamline this process because using my phone seems too time-consuming, especially given the number of students I might need to scan work for at once.

I use an HP Office Jet which includes a 30-page scanner and a flatbed option. It does require scanning each page twice for double-sided documents, but it collates everything nicely. The HP Easy Scan app on Mac is user-friendly and offers customization for various file types. Just a tip: make sure papers are flat when you scan or else you’ll have to use the flatbed for each page individually.

For your needs, I recommend checking out small document scanners like the Epson ES-C220. It's quick, auto-straightens, and can scan both sides in color. There are also software options like Paperless-ngx that can help you stay organized by tagging and dating your files easily.

Labeling PDFs can be a headache, but one solution is scanning them into different folders named after each student. This makes it easier to keep everything sorted.

Another solid option is the Scansnap series. They tend to be pricier (around $300-$500) but offer OCR (Optical Character Recognition), which can automatically label scanned pages based on their content. This feature can save you a lot of time when organizing your documents, plus you can set it up to scan into different folders depending on batch loads.
