Switching to Linux: Should I Choose Mint or Go for Hyprland on Garuda?

Hey everyone! I've been using Windows for a long time and I'm finally ready to ditch it in favor of Linux. I'm leaning towards Linux Mint because I've heard it's user-friendly. However, I've come across Hyprland and some stunning setups (or 'rices' as they call them) that really caught my eye. I've realized that diving into Hyprland would require a solid understanding of Linux, which I currently lack. Now I'm considering Garuda Linux since it's Arch-based and supposedly works well with Hyprland. What should I focus on learning to create cool setups on Hyprland? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! 🙂

Hyprland isn't really suited for beginners since it has a steep learning curve when it comes to configuration. I suggest sticking with Mint or even Fedora for a while until you grasp the core concepts of Linux.

Before jumping into Hyprland, consider if you really need a tiling window manager. It’s important to first build a solid foundation in basic Linux skills. Make a list of your essential programs and find Linux equivalents, then pick a distribution to start with. Once you're comfortable, that's when you can start customizing and getting into ricing!

Running someone else's dotfiles doesn't teach you much about Linux. I'd advise against choosing Arch just because of a window manager. If you have an old laptop or partition, play around with different configurations from others. That way, you can see what you like and learn how to set it up yourself.

I think you should stick with Linux Mint for starters. It's a great way to get familiar with the basics of Linux. Once you’re comfortable, you can try installing Arch manually in a virtual machine. The Arch wiki is really informative and useful! I’m not trying to gatekeep Arch; just want to make sure your switch to Linux is smooth without too many headaches.
