Hey everyone! I have 3.5 years of experience in SEO, but I'm considering a switch to DevOps for several reasons, including personal growth, financial stability, and professional development. I come from a commerce background, but I've always interacted with tech-related tasks, which made me feel like I could be better suited for a technical role rather than marketing. I've been preparing for this change since March and have covered a lot of ground, like learning basic concepts, Linux commands, Git and GitHub, Python (from basics to scripting), Bash scripting, and an introduction to CI/CD pipelines using GitHub actions. Right now, I'm just diving into AWS. I learned all of this through a friend's course, and now I'm considering buying a DevOps course for certification since I feel it might help me in the job hunt. Given my transition without a tech degree, I'd love to hear your thoughts on whether I'm on the right track or if you have any suggestions. Any realistic advice would be appreciated!

You might not need a certificate! Many companies care more about your actual skills than formal qualifications. I've switched jobs in DevOps before without anyone asking about my credentials. Just focus on building your skills!
Consider aiming for internal mobility. If you're in a company with tech teams, leverage your current role to transition into tech. Master the necessary stack, help out on low-priority projects, and build relationships. This could lead to opportunities in DevOps down the line. It might take time, but it’s a solid strategy!
Before applying, make sure you understand DevOps fundamentals, especially AWS since you're just starting with it. Build a complete CI/CD system as a project. Label your experience accurately; you can market your background in system administration or similar roles while applying for jobs. It's tough, but possible!
Thanks! I plan to create a few projects before I start applying. Do you think that’s a good approach?
I was in your shoes once, coming from a finance background. I took the Free Code Camp certification route, but mostly focused on building projects to showcase my skills. Most employers didn't ask about a certificate; they wanted to see real-world problem-solving skills. You're on the right path, just keep building and learning!
Got it! So focusing on real-life projects is key. I appreciate your insight!
Starting with the AWS Solutions Architect certification is a good idea, then aim for the DevOps certification. They can help you get past initial HR screenings. Work on basic projects, like setting up CI/CD pipelines; this will build the skills you need. Nothing is impossible if you put in the work!
That’s true, but I feel a certificate could still help me stand out since I lack formal tech experience. Should I go ahead and get one?
