Thinking About Switching to Linux: What Should I Consider?

I've been exploring Linux over the Summer and I was considering switching from Windows mainly for better privacy and customization. However, I initially set it aside due to a requirement for a "lockdown browser" for my upcoming Master's program that wasn't available on Linux. Recently, I found out that all students are required to use an iPad for everything, which includes the lockdown browser. So, I'm back to thinking about making the switch to Linux!

Currently, I use my laptop for reading textbooks (whether as pdfs or epubs), accessing class PowerPoint files, taking notes with Notion, and watching videos on platforms like YouTube. I also have a Windows PC that I plan to keep for gaming or other software not available on Linux. I'm confident I'll find alternatives for my needs on Linux, but I'm curious about the compromises I might face and any specific benefits Linux could offer for my situation.

You might find that you'll need to use several different pieces of software to accomplish tasks that would normally be handled by a single program on Windows. But the silver lining is that a lot of these alternatives are free, so you're dodging hefty price tags!

Check out some great resources, especially Explaining Computers on YouTube for solid guides. For beginners, I'd recommend trying Linux Mint or Fedora, depending on your aesthetic preferences. Just keep in mind, Linux won't be exactly like Windows, so there's a bit of a learning curve. For your current tasks like pdf and web browsing, apps like Firefox or LibreOffice will suit your needs just fine. Notion is installable too, but it might take a couple of extra steps. Games can be hit or miss on Linux, so check compatibility sites before diving in, especially if you're worried about anti-cheat issues. Good luck!

Thanks for the insights! I'm looking forward to exploring those resources. The adjustment will be tough, but I'm ready to tackle it!

Just make sure your university is providing you with those iPads, other than that, jumping to Linux can be a great move! You'll have to adapt a bit since it’s not Windows, but it really allows you to take control of your system without the bloat. Hope it goes well!
