Hey everyone! I'm really considering getting a new laptop with Linux Ubuntu preinstalled since my current one is an old 2015 streambook that's starting to fail on me. As an English major, most of my coursework involves writing papers, and I'm not too worried about the transition since I know I can still save documents as .doc files. However, I'm a bit concerned about maintaining formatting during this process. I'm also aware that Linux can be beginner-friendly, and while I've fiddled with coding a bit in the past, I'm not an expert.
So, here's my question: Do you think switching to a Linux laptop is a smart move for my college studies, or could it be a hindrance in the long run? Thanks for your insights!

You should be good to go! If it’s an issue, you can always switch to Linux after school. Plus, many students use Linux just for writing without major hiccups. Just keep your file formats in mind and you’ll be fine.
Honestly, it might be simpler to just switch the OS on your current laptop, but if it's really on its last legs, a new Linux laptop should serve you well for writing. Most office suites available on Linux can handle .doc files pretty well, so you could try them out on Windows first before making a leap.

Yeah, my current laptop barely lasted me through a semester, so I totally get wanting an upgrade.
