Tips for Screwing in a CPU Cooler Evenly?

I'm building my first PC and I'm having trouble installing a Thermalright Peerless Assassin cooler on a B550M motherboard. The tutorials I found don't really explain how to screw in the cooler evenly. I try tightening one screw on one side and then the other, but it seems like only one screw gets secured, and the other side ends up too far away to attach. Sometimes I can get both screws attached, but they're loose, and when I tighten them, one unhooks itself. Can anyone give me detailed advice on how to screw in the cooler evenly? I'm really stuck here. Thanks!

I used an X-pattern technique when screwing mine in. Start with a bit on one corner, then go to the opposite corner, then back to the other corners, and keep repeating this until they're snug. It should help keep it even. In my case, they didn't seem to have a hard stop, so I figured it couldn't be over-tightened. Just take your time with it!

That's what I've been trying, but it seems like one side always gets tighter than the other. Any advice on how to handle that?
