Transitioning from Helpdesk to Systems Administrator: What Certifications Should I Pursue?

I'm currently a Tier 2 Helpdesk Engineer working for a Managed Service Provider (MSP), but I want to transition into a Systems Administrator role. Unfortunately, there aren't any Sysadmins in my company; typically, those types of tickets and projects get handed off to the field team. So, I'm looking to move on to a different company.

My current employer reimburses test vouchers, but only for Microsoft certifications. Right now, I'm working on the AZ-900 just to get a basic understanding, even though I know it's not very significant. What other Microsoft certifications would be beneficial for my resume? If there are better options outside of Microsoft, I'd love to hear which certifications I should consider pursuing independently. To give you some background, I've worked my way up from IT dispatcher (Tier 0) to Technical Analyst (Tier 1 and Tier 2), totaling about four years of IT experience.

Before diving into certifications, it's smart to check out job listings for Sysadmin roles at other companies. Look for the specific certifications and skills they require. If you’re considering a shift away from being an MSP, it might even make you a more appealing candidate, based on the diverse experience you have. Connecting with someone from the field team could also provide insights into what skills you might need to develop further.

If you're focused on Microsoft certs, definitely consider the AZ-800 and AZ-801. They offer a solid foundation in Windows Server, which is essential for sysadmins. Just remember, the Sysadmin role can be quite broad, so think about where your interests lie and what skills are in-demand for the companies you're eyeing.

What specifically do you want to focus on in Systems Administration? Whether it’s networking, voice systems, or something else, that's going to steer your certification path. If you're interested, getting involved with projects that the field team handles could give you the experience you need.

Have you thought about moving to the field team at your current company? It could be a smoother transition into Sysadmin work rather than switching companies. Sometimes, staying within the same organization can help you leverage your existing relationships and knowledge.
