I'm having a frustrating issue with Remote Desktop Protocol on a Windows Server 2016. I can connect without problems using RDCMan, but when I try to connect via the standard Remote Desktop app or set it up as a new entry in RDCMan, I get an error saying it can't connect. I can ping the server just fine, but it doesn't even prompt me for credentials. Any suggestions on what might be causing this?

Is the Windows Firewall blocking your access? Sometimes it seems off, but it's worth double-checking. Are you using a different security software that could interfere? I've had issues with BitDefender in the past.
It might be worth checking if the network adapter's profile has changed to public or private, or if network discovery is turned off in your sharing settings. Those could definitely hinder your connection.
I'm experiencing something similar with a Server 2025. My first connection attempt usually fails, but the second one works. Do you have IPSec enabled, or a PKI set up with CRL or OCSP lookups? Also, what kind of authentication method are you using—passwords, Smart Cards, or have you enabled Restricted Admin/Remote Credential Guard?
