Trouble Getting Steam to Work on Ubuntu

Hey everyone! I recently switched to Ubuntu on my PC because it was running slow. I managed to install Discord without any issues through the app store, but I'm having a serious problem with Steam. It downloads fine and starts up, letting me connect, but then I can't access the graphic interface at all! My library and the store are completely inaccessible, and the only thing I can do is quit Steam. Does anyone have any advice on how to fix this?

Just a heads up, some people find Ubuntu not the best for gaming. Have you thought about checking out alternatives like Pop OS or Nobara? They’re often regarded as better options for gaming on Linux.

First off, check which version of Steam you installed. It's possible you might have the SNAP version, which can be problematic. If that’s the case, try downloading the .deb version instead. You can get it from the Steam repository. Also, launching Steam from the terminal might give you some error messages that could help pinpoint the issue!

I found that I don’t have the SNAP version either. I can see Steam in my app list, but it’s not showing in the snap directory. I’m planning to uninstall it and then grab the .deb version instead.

Can definitely confirm that the SNAP version has had issues in the past. Installing Steam from the official repo directly using a tool like gdebi or apt could resolve your troubles.
