Troubleshooting Slow Internet Speed When Tethering

I'm using my phone as a hotspot for my PC because my USB Wi-Fi adapter isn't performing well. My phone gets internet speeds of up to 300 Mbps, but my PC's speed fluctuates between 20 Mbps and 200 Mbps. I thought the issue was with the cable, so I bought a new USB 3.0 cable, but that didn't help. Just to clarify, my phone is connected to Wi-Fi, not mobile data. I'd appreciate any assistance or advice on how to improve my PC's internet speed.

It sounds like there might be a bottleneck in the connection between your phone and PC rather than an issue with your Wi-Fi signal itself. Here are a few things to check: Ensure you're using USB 3.0 ports on both your phone and PC, as speeds can drop if you're inadvertently using USB 2.0. Also, check if your phone's USB tethering driver on Windows is up to date by reinstalling it via Device Manager. Sometimes background processes or Windows updates can eat up bandwidth too. Lastly, if your phone gets overheated or is multitasking, it might throttle the tethering speed. If you can, try to use a direct Ethernet connection or consider investing in a reliable USB 3.0 Wi-Fi adapter for more consistent internet speeds.

Just so you know, I exclusively use USB 3.0 and 3.1 ports! The distance from my modem makes an Ethernet connection challenging, but I'll definitely check into the USB tethering driver.

I've faced similar issues before and found that using a powered Wi-Fi extender can make a huge difference. By connecting your PC directly to the extender with an Ethernet cable, you'll get better speeds for streaming and downloading large files. This way, you'll have a more stable connection than relying solely on tethering from your phone.
