I'm looking to create a temporary PC using a Lenovo ThinkStation I scored for free. It's got an 8th gen i7 and some decent RAM, but the graphics card is pretty underwhelming. I want to transfer everything into a nicer case, ideally one with RGB fans, since I'm aiming for something that looks cool while I save up for better components.
My main concern is with the power supply that comes with the ThinkStation (model FAP400-40AGPAA). It's not very high wattage but it's 80 plus platinum rated. Here are my questions: 1. Can this power supply fit into a standard ATX case without any issues due to its size (15x14x8.1cm)? 2. It has a mix of proprietary connectors (10+4+6+2 pins) — will I be able to connect it to a regular motherboard without any special adapters, or will I need to do some modifications? If adapters are needed, what should I get? If necessary, I'm open to investing in a new power supply that would last for a future full build. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

You'll definitely need a standard ATX power supply. The one that came with the Lenovo is proprietary and won't fit other motherboards. Check out the PSU tier list online for some solid recommendations. But seriously, is there something wrong with the Lenovo case and motherboard? They might be just fine for your needs.

Thanks for that! I appreciate your input. I’m sticking with this project mainly to help my kid feel good about his setup. It's also a good way for us to learn about building PCs together.
