Upgrading CPU for Gaming Performance at 4K: Need Help!

I'm currently gaming on ARC Raiders at 4K with a setup that includes an i7 10700 CPU, a TUF 5070ti GPU, and 32GB of DDR4 RAM. Despite getting over 300 FPS with DLSS, my CPU usage spikes close to 100%, often leading to significant lag and even crashes. I've already ensured no background apps are running and have optimized settings. I'm looking to upgrade my CPU but want to avoid switching to DDR5 right now due to costs. My budget is around $700, and I'm considering CPUs like the 5800x3d or 14900k. I'd appreciate any recommendations for a CPU that will last me another 4 to 5 years without needing to upgrade again soon.

When considering an upgrade, don’t just focus on RAM prices. DDR4 is becoming more expensive too. For longevity, the AM5 7800x3d or 9800x3d would be ideal, as they offer great performance. Pairing with a good motherboard and RAM combo would ensure you’re set for the next few years with solid performance without breaking the bank.

Wow, 4K at that FPS with a 5070ti is impressive! Have you thought about checking bundles? Microcenter has some good deals, like a 9850x3d bundle for $700 with a decent motherboard and RAM. There’s also a cheaper option with a 7800x3d for $600. It's a smart investment, especially since you want to keep your costs down and avoid DDR5 for now.

Thanks for the tip! I’ll definitely look into those bundles. Wish me luck picking a new CPU!

What’s the refresh rate of your monitor? Limiting your FPS to the refresh rate could be beneficial. Reducing to around 120 FPS might help with performance issues since pulling 300 FPS at 4K sounds crazy!

My monitor is 120Hz. Do you really think limiting it will help?

If you're getting 300 FPS in 4K with upscaling, consider capping your framerate to 144 FPS. This could alleviate the CPU bottleneck and lag issues. If you're keen on upgrading your CPU, the Intel 14th Gen is solid as it supports both DDR4 and DDR5, allowing for future-proofing. However, the 5800x3d might be overpriced and harder to find right now.
