Using an External Hard Drive with My TV: What Should I Know?

Hey everyone! I've been thinking about how expensive subscriptions for streaming services can be, and I'm looking into a more budget-friendly option for watching movies. I want to connect an external hard drive with my TV that has all my movie files on it. But I'm a bit lost on this—what types of hard drives should I consider (ideally 2-4 TB range), and do I need to format them in a specific way to work with my TV? Are there any guides out there, and are there certain hard drives I should steer clear of? Thanks for the advice!

You might want to think about a media server since most TVs don’t let you just plug in a hard drive and start viewing. Try looking into options like Plex or Jellyfin—they're really helpful for organizing and playing your media. Plus, they have tons of info online to get you started!

That said, if you want the simplest option, a Roku Ultra with a USB port can let you plug in your drive and play files directly—pretty handy!

Also, just to add, a lot of TVs can read USB sticks. A 32GB FAT32 stick can work great for transferring a few movies easily!

I've got three different 2TB external hard drives (Toshiba & Seagate) and they work fine with my LG and Samsung TVs. Just plug it into the USB port and the TV recognizes it right away. I doubt you'll have issues with modern TVs doing the same.

If you want to go a more robust route, consider setting up a NAS like QNAP. You can run Plex Media Server on that and have all your media in one place, accessible from any TV with the Plex app. You'll love it!
