Webcam Crashes Laptop When Using VPN

Hey everyone, we're facing a frustrating issue with several Dell Latitude Pro laptops running Windows 11 (both versions 23H2 and 24H2). Whenever a user connects to our VPN and tries to access the webcam—whether in apps like Zoom, Teams, or even the default Camera app—the computer freezes or becomes unresponsive. Most of the time, the only fix is a hard reboot. This problem occurs consistently across our entire fleet of Dell Latitude Pro laptops, regardless of the operating system version. It seems specific to using the camera while connected to the VPN since everything works fine when disconnected. We've already tried a bunch of troubleshooting steps, including clean installs, custom deployments, various driver tests, and adjustments to BIOS settings, but we're still stumped. We suspect there's some sort of conflict between the camera system and the way the VPN handles device enumeration or traffic. Has anyone else encountered this issue? Any tips, workarounds, or deeper diagnostic suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Also, if you have Dell Optimizer installed, that software is known to conflict with webcams on Windows 11. If you've got it, consider uninstalling it to see if that helps. Alternatively, some users reported that their internal cameras caused BSODs, which might point to deeper issues we've also battled with Dell support.

It sounds like you might be dealing with a conflict due to antivirus or data loss prevention software. We had similar issues with our camera where it just stopped working. Try disabling any AV or DLP software to see if that resolves the problem. We ended up having to file a support ticket to fix ours after making some changes.

Have you checked your split-tunneling configuration? When you're on the VPN, the handling of traffic can affect device performance, including the webcam. If split-tunneling isn't set up right, that might be causing the issues you're experiencing.
