Weird Laptop Behavior While I Was Away—Am I Hacked?

I recently had a strange experience with my Windows 10 laptop (version 22H2). Last night, I used it normally and then closed the lid before going to bed. However, while I was at work today, my Spotify started playing from that laptop, even though it was supposed to be in sleep mode. My girlfriend, who was at home, heard the audio and opened and closed the lid to put it back to sleep.

When I got home and opened the laptop, I noticed a lot of bizarre activity:

- The taskbar was moved.
- Several unfamiliar programs and windows were open, such as:
- Microsoft Edge, displaying random MSN tabs (I don't even use Edge).
- Google Earth with strange lines drawn on the globe.
- Windows Event Viewer.
- Bulk Crap Uninstaller.
- A screenshot with odd scribbles.
- Calculator.

I ran full scans with both Windows Defender and Malwarebytes, and thankfully, they didn't find any malware. I'm cautious about my downloads and don't visit sketchy sites. Now, I'm left with these questions:

1. Could someone have accessed my laptop remotely or hacked it?
2. How can I check what programs or files were accessed while I was gone?
3. What should my next steps be to investigate and enhance my security?

It’s possible for someone to remotely access your laptop if you have any Remote Desktop programs like TeamViewer or AnyDesk installed and enabled. But from what you’re describing, it seems more like a series of accidental events rather than a deliberate hack. Hackers typically look for financial info or valuable accounts. Have you checked for strange USB devices connected to your laptop?

Definitely check if your girlfriend might be pulling your leg. In the age of TikTok, anything's possible!

I agree, it sounds more like random glitches or maybe even a funny accident with the trackpad, especially if no suspicious software was installed.

I think what happened is likely not a hack but could just be random clicks or some software misbehaving. It might be worth checking if someone accidentally pressed keys that caused those actions while you were away. You also might want to consider running an offline scan with Windows Defender for extra peace of mind.

That makes sense! It's weird how sensitive some laptops can be. Maybe an antivirus update could help too.

And remember, if you suspect something's off, don’t hesitate to reset or restore your system to safeguard your data.

For your specific questions:

1. Yes, if there was a Remote Desktop app installed and running, that could lead to remote access.

2. There’s no built-in way to see what was accessed, but you can check Task Manager for app history over the last month.

3. First, disconnect the laptop from the internet. Then follow what others suggest regarding security measures.

Always good advice to disconnect! Just remember to check your port settings too.
