I recently acquired an Optoma DS316L projector, but I noticed it doesn't have an HDMI port—only older connections like VGA and RCA. I'm looking for advice on which type of adapter or converter I should get. Is there a difference between using an HDMI to VGA versus an HDMI to RCA in terms of refresh rate or picture quality? Also, would converters from lower-cost sites like AliExpress be reliable? I've seen similar products at higher prices elsewhere.

I looked up your projector, and wow, it’s definitely a vintage model! For your setup, I’d recommend going with an HDMI to VGA converter. Most of these are passively powered, which makes for a simpler connection. On the other hand, HDMI to RCA converters typically require external power. So, if you want less mess and more convenience, VGA is the way to go!
Definitely stick with the VGA option. It supports much higher resolutions than RCA, and since your projector is from around 2012, it should still handle decent quality. Just keep in mind that the resolution is likely only 800x600. Should work fine for movie nights in your dorm!
You can find HDMI to VGA adapters on Amazon for under $10. I just got one for connecting my laptop to an older TV, and it's been great for my classes. It should work well for your projector too!
